There were 69 Illinois counties logged by '99 IQP participants. This was down a bit from the '98 affair, when WA3HAE alone logged 73. How important were the mobiles? Thirty-five of the 69 counties were put on by mobiles ONLY! Three counties were represented solely by fixed stations: JACK PULA and SALI.

One of the things this points out is that mobiles don't have to venture to the ends of the earth (read: Soutern Illinois....) to be useful and unique. A swing through Decatur or Pekin would have put two "new" counties on the air! Also, the "hotspots" of activity were a result of club activity: COOK KANE DUPA ADAM. Nobody had any excuse for missing *those* counties! There are numerous local clubs around the state that need to be encouraged to participate, even casually, in upcoming IQPs.
Might be a great chance to go in and present a program to a local club....

Miscellaneous notes:
KF9D is simply the King of mobiles. He's been at it for several years, knows the routes, knows the participants, knows the code and the strategy. It would take one heck of an operator to beat him.
Some coordination of mobiles would be a plus to the overall event. There's nothing wrong with having several mobiles run a particular county, but it would be nice not to miss some of the ones close by. For example, FAYE FORD LOGN MACN MNRD TAZW could have been run without much trouble by mobiles very close to them.
I'm going to do one more year at the ADAM/BROW/PIKE corner. I now have a "real" mobile rig, an FT900 and am working on putting together the kind of mobile antenna system that I think will do the job in terms of effectiveness and ease of operation. I also have a tentative route in Southern Illinois that will include 21 counties, 17 of which were not included, or minimally activated, in 1999. In addition, I have a 15-year-old daughter who is anxious to do a "road trip" and who by that time *I hope* can navigate her way around that part of the world without a lot of direction from Dad. It could be interesting....
Suggestions for this year:
In addition to the usual mailings to last year's participants and the announcement on the website, it might be fruitful to make a lot of noise on the SMC reflector and on CQ-Contest. Send mailings to every club in the state, emphasizing that "we don't want your county to be left out". There has been no distinction made between single-op and multi-op stations. I don't have a problem with competing with multi-ops. It might be good to mention how much fun IQP can be with a few friends at a decent station. There are a lot of contest stations around the state that are unused that weekend. I'm thinking of offering my home station to KI0W for the day while I go out into the bush.
A plea to mobiles from neighboring states might put a few more counties on the air. Spillover from St Louis, Evansville or Paducah would be a BIG help!
That's about it. If you find something that looks like an obvious typo, it probably is! I'm throwing this together just before leaving for midnight shift....
